DHAOF Student Professional Development Program

A practical bridge from student to professional

The proposed DHAOF Student Professional Development Program is a voluntary series of short learning modules that complement—not replace—the academic dental hygiene curriculum. Students could explore licensure, professional judgment, employment readiness, advocacy, and ethical practice through case discussions and guided activities.

Proposed recognition

Participants who complete the series and any required reflections or knowledge checks could receive a DHAOF Student Professional Readiness Certificate. This would be a certificate of program participation, not a professional license, academic credential, or an assurance of CE credit. DHAOF should publish completion criteria before issuing certificates.

Five core resources

  1. Florida Licensure Guide: application stages, current board requirements, official verification links and a document checklist.
  2. Know Your Scope Toolkit: introductions to the dental hygiene practice act, supervision rules, professional boundaries and how to verify updates.
  3. First Job Toolkit: résumés, interviews, job-offer questions, mentorship, workplace communication and onboarding.
  4. Clinical Critical-Thinking Case Library: educational scenarios supporting evidence appraisal, communication and appropriate referral decisions.
  5. Board of Dentistry & Advocacy 101: the rulemaking process, public meetings, professional associations and constructive civic participation.

How schools and DHAOF can collaborate

DHAOF could invite educators and practitioners to review the modules, host virtual discussions, and offer student mentorship while keeping academic assessment with the school. A pilot could measure engagement, learner feedback, and confidence discussing career decisions.

Florida context and verification

Florida law specifies at least 24 but no more than 36 hours of continuing professional education biennially for licensed dental hygienists; current Board guidance details the applicable renewal requirements. The Board also lists accredited dental hygiene schools among approved provider categories. These provisions apply to licensed professionals and approved CE programs; they do not make the proposed student certificate an approved continuing-education credential.
